The time has come for the retirement from full practice of the first generation of our firm’s partners, a generation whose work was of paramount importance in the development of our services and expertise.
With this page, we would like to acknowledge the important contribution of these partners who were central to the expansion and success of BCF since its inception.
As far back as the days they first joined our firm, Jacques Des Marais and Jean-François Hudon have played a key role in the history of BCF as well as of their respective practice fields. Honest, methodical and recognized for the excellence of their work as well as their work ethic, their legacy will have a long-lasting influence on our culture of excellence.
The entire BCF team would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to both of them for their passion and their commitment to our firm’s progress.
JACQUES DES MARAIS
Jacques Des Marais has been a builder throughout his career and his professional life is closely associated to our firm’s beginnings.
Partner at Hart, Saint-Pierre, Des Marais in the 1980s, he was a mentor to none other than BCF founding member and Chairman of the Board André Morrissette. While he was a partner at Woods, Brouillette, Des Marais, he recruited Mario Charpentier, current BCF managing partner, in 1992. BCF originated from this firm in 1995.
During his years at BCF, Mr. Des Marais practiced fiscal and commercial law primarily and his endeavours were essentially focussed on the judicial, commercial and corporate service requirements of his BCF clients. From the moment of his return among us in 2001, he was truly committed to the firm’s development, as a member of the Board, at the outset, and, subsequently, as a member of the BCF executive committee.
Lawyer, accountant and fiscalist, he has represented Canadian subsidiaries of multinational corporations and has been regularly involved on behalf of small and medium businesses in business acquisitions and sales, corporate restructurings, estate planning as well as matters involving entertainment law. He moreover represented Céline Dion and René Angélil from the outset of the singer’s career up until her relocation to Las Vegas.
Mr. Des Marais will pursue certain professional activities for the firm as a consulting lawyer until his full retirement.
In 2001, Jean-François Hudon, a well-known lawyer in his field, became a BCF partner. Having handled many important undertakings before he joined the firm, he helped shape our team thanks to his vast experience and his recognized expertise in banking law, commercial law and real property law.
Mr. Hudon began his career in 1970 at the Provincial Bank, where he worked for 10 years. During this period, he was assistant director of the legal department for 5 years. Following the merger of this bank with Bank Canadian National (now National Bank of Canada), he joined the Godin Tellier Poirier firm as a partner. In the subsequent years, this firm was known (as of 1987) as Godin, Raymond, Harris Thomas, and then, from 1995, Hudon Gendron Harris Thomas. After this firm’s dissolution in 1998, Mr. Hudon founded Pinsonnault Torralbo Hudon, a firm specialized in banking law as well as real property law that focussed primarily on litigation.
From the moment he joined BCF in 2001, he was promptly acknowledged as a leader, and was subsequently a member of the firm’s Board for three years. Not only did he carry out many important undertakings during his career, Jean-François Hudon was also involved for more than 35 years - 25 of which as Chairman of the Board - with the Capeq Inc. organization (now known as Axia services), a social economy enterprise whose purpose is the integration of individuals with intellectual limitations into the job market.
Greatly appreciated by his colleagues, he was clearly also well-regarded by his peers, as can be ascertained by his being president of the Québec branch of the Canadian Bar Association’s Real property law Section from September 2009 through to May 2012.
Mr. Hudon will remain an active member of our team as a consulting lawyer up until the start of his full retirement.
