Modifiable Licensing in AI: A New Era for Open Source

In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) shapes our future, open source remains an essential pillar of its development.

Misha Benjamin and Paul Gagnon co-leaders for Technology and AI at BCF have collaborated with experts in the field of AI to introduce a novel approach in their publication “On the Modification and Revocation of Open-Source Licenses.” This initiative aims to mark a turning point in the management of open-source contributions in AI, offering increased flexibility to adapt to the sector’s rapid evolution.

Introduction of the Modifiable License (M-type)

The modifiable license (M-type) allows contributors to better manage the rights and risks associated with their contributions by modifying or revoking the permission granted. This license provides the necessary flexibility to adapt to the rapid developments in AI and regulatory changes.

This innovative approach redefines the standards of open source in AI and highlights the importance of adaptability and the protection of interests within the open-source ecosystem. The authors propose a significant advancement for the AI community, promoting secure and responsible sharing, as well as better tools for proactively managing risk.
