Etienne Lacroix-Couillard

Etienne Lacroix-Couillard is a lawyer in the commercial litigation group at the Montréal office. His practice focuses primarily on commercial and intellectual property litigation, including extraordinary remedies, non-competition and non-solicitation disputes, and shareholder disputes.

Etienne regularly handles urgent matters requiring swift action in court, whether to obtain, enforce, or challenge temporary and interlocutory injunctions, protective orders, Anton Piller orders, or seizures before judgment. In particular, he represents companies and their executives in disputes related to the departure of key employees and unfair competition, including matters involving non-compete and non-solicitation clauses, poaching of clients, and the misuse of confidential information. He also handles shareholder disputes, particularly in oppression claims and disputes concerning share buybacks.

Having begun his career at a national law firm specializing in intellectual property, he also has specific experience in litigation involving corporate intangible assets. He represents clients in cases involving trademarks, misleading advertising, patents, and industrial designs, and can assist when a commercial dispute also involves intellectual property issues.

Finally, his practice includes construction litigation, particularly cases involving statutory liens.

Etienne has appeared before the Superior Court of Québec, the Québec Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, and the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in cases heard in Montréal, Toronto, Ottawa, and Halifax. He works in both French and English with local, national, and international clients.

A law graduate of the University of Montréal, Etienne completed his professional training at the École du Barreau du Québec in 2020. Before joining BCF in 2024, he practised for five years at the Montréal office of a national law firm. He also completed the Barreau du Québec’s Advocacy Skills Seminar.

At the firm, Etienne is involved in recruiting and training the next generation of lawyers, particularly through the articling student recruitment process and the mock trial program. He also contributes to initiatives aimed at integrating artificial intelligence into litigation practice.
