Jean-Sébastien is a lawyer and patent agent with over twenty years of practice in intellectual property (IP). He has extensive experience in litigation and commercial transactions involving IP assets. In addition to practicing Canadian law, Jean-Sébastien has developed an excellent understanding of US and French/European patent law.

Since the beginning of his career, Jean-Sébastien has been involved in numerous patent, copyright and trade-mark infringement litigations (mainly before the Federal Court of Canada, but also abroad), as well as in several commercial litigations resulting from technology transfers or joint or institutional research activities.

In addition, Jean-Sébastien regularly negotiates and drafts agreements relating to the exploitation or transfer of technologies, particularly in the context of joint development projects and licensing agreements.

Jean-Sébastien is also often called upon as an IP advisor in commercial transactions involving significant technological assets, whether in connection with mergers and acquisitions or financing, particularly through venture capital.

Based on his various professional experiences, Jean-Sébastien assists numerous entrepreneurs in the development and exploitation of patent-based intellectual property portfolios.

Finally, Jean-Sébastien has a passion for teaching and popularization and, since 2007, he has taught IP and patent law in several universities. He also regularly gives advanced training on US, Canadian and European patent law in various contexts.

    Since 2015, Jean-Sébastien has regularly given specialized seminars on specific aspects of Canadian, U.S. or European patent law to Canadian and foreign patent agents (e.g., a series of four (4) two-hour seminars on the consideration of the non-obviousness requirement by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office; a series of a dozen seminars to prepare patent agents in training to write the Canadian qualifying exam).

    Throughout his career, Jean-Sébastien has given numerous lectures ranging in length from 45 minutes to 2 hours in various contexts. For example, he has given such training at the following conferences, programs or institutions: Master II in Industrial and Artistic Property of Université Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne, MSBi, the Canadian Institute, McGill University, the Annual Conference of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association, École Polytechnique de Montréal, the Parc technologique du Québec métropolitain, the École de design of the Université de Montréal, the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal/World Trade Centre, and the Barreau du Québec (Recent developments in intellectual property law).
