Professional background

Gaétan Prince joined BCF’s team in September 2002 as a partner.

Since 1981, Mr. Prince has practiced in the area of intellectual property, more specifically in the field of patents of invention. His expertise extends, amongst others, to drafting and prosecuting patent applications in Canada and foreign countries, and preparing patent infringement, patent validity and freedom-to-operate opinions. He is often involved in due diligence processes, as well as in the preparation, filing and prosecution of applications for the registration of industrial designs. He is entrusted with mandates coming not only from Canadians but also foreign clients.

In the last 10 years, Mr. Prince acquired a particular expertise in the field of telecommunications, including voice compression, and this expertise led him to act as evaluator of the essential nature of patents related to the ITU-T G.729, MPEG-4 audio and DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) Standards. He currently acts as evaluator of the essential nature of patents related to the 3G standard.

Involvement

  • In charge of BCF's Patent Team.

  • Member of the committee responsible for the preparation and marking of the patent agent exams in Canada, from 1990 to 1993.
